Identification
Common Name3-Mercaptolactic acid
ClassSmall Molecule
Description3-Mercaptolactic acid, also known as 3-mercaptolactic acid, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as monosaccharides. Monosaccharides are compounds containing one carbohydrate unit not glycosidically linked to another such unit, and no set of two or more glycosidically linked carbohydrate units. Monosaccharides have the general formula CnH2nOn. 3-Mercaptolactic acid is possibly soluble (in water) and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). 3-Mercaptolactic acid can be converted into 3-mercaptopyruvic acid through its interaction with the enzyme L-lactate dehydrogenase. In cattle, 3-mercaptolactic acid is involved in the metabolic pathway called the cysteine metabolism pathway.
